Design tip: Keeping existing materials

Lofts are living spaces that have industrial roots, more often artist studios or former small office spaces that are built more for practicality than aesthetics. When decorating or remodeling a newly acquired loft, why not keep most of the existing design and choose materials and furnishing that complement them instead? Be both practical and stylish. Harsher-looking materials such as steel, or wood, or brick, can be nicely balanced with softer fabrics and materials. Highlight interesting structures such as old posts, beams, and columns, crevices in walls, or hand railings. By doing this, you are not only saving money but paying homage to architectural history as well.
